How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?

how long does CBD stay in your system

CBD has recently taken the world by storm, with over 64 million Americans have tried this alternative health treatment.

Although CBD isn’t a medically proven cure for any specific conditions, users swear by its health benefits.

From easing feelings of anxiety and depression to treating things like insomnia and inflammation, millions of people are consuming CBD products each day.

Whether you’ve dabbled in CBD already or are thinking about buying CBD products, you probably have lots of questions. One that may top your list is, “How long does CBD stay in your system?”

While CBD doesn’t contain THC and therefore won’t negatively affect a drug test, you may still be wondering how long the effects last.

Keep reading to discover the answer to this question and much more about CBD products and their benefits.

How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?

There’s no cut-and-dry answer to this question, but on average, CBD products linger in your system for 2 to 5 days. Once consumed, CBD is stored in your body’s fat cells for several days.

Countless factors go into just how long CBD lasts including dosage, the type of CBD product you use, and your physical make-up.

Other deciding factors include how often you use CBD products, the speed of your metabolism, and whether or not you’ve eaten.

CBD Dosage Explained

How much CBD is too much?

Have you ever popped a CBD gummy or tasted a piece of chocolate infused with CBD only to be disappointed by the lack of reaction?

The truth is, the more you weigh, the more CBD you need to consume. And the more you consume, the longer it stays in your system.

A general rule of thumb is that for anyone under 150 pounds, 15 mg will have a medium affect, whereas users weighing over 240 pounds might require double the dose (30 mg) to achieve the same results.

It’s important to note that these are loose recommendations and should never be considered a medical diagnosis.

How CBD is Consumed

There are several ways to consume CBD products from edibles and tinctures to topical creams and vapes. How the CBD enters your body determines now only how long it lasts in your system but how quickly (and strongly) you feel the affects.

CBD vape enters your lungs directly and takes affect almost immediately. It also leaves your body relatively quickly.

Tinctures and oils placed under your tongue also take rapid effect, entering your bloodstream almost right away. These CBD products stay in your system slightly longer than vape products.

Edibles must be digested, which means they take significantly longer to break down and for the effects to take hold. The less food you have in your system, the more quickly your metabolism will process edible CBD products.

Topical creams take just as long to enter the body as they do to exit.

CBD Products and Your Body

In addition to the form of CBD you consume, your physical make up plays a big part in knowing how long does CBD last.

Your gender, weight, and metabolism all factor into how fast your body absorbs, metabolizes, and releases CBD from your system.

CBD products affect people in different ways. Two people with the same body type, age, and gender may have two very different reactions to the same CBD supplement.

The immediate effects may last longer and traces of CBD might linger in their system for up to a week. Each person is unique and so too is their reaction to CBD supplements and products.

History of Use

How often and for how long you use CBD products will also impact your reaction, dosage, and how long it stays in your system.

Someone who’s never consumed CBD before will have a much stronger reaction on a much lower dose. A regular CBD user will likely need more than one dose to feel the desired effects.

As with any substance, your body develops a tolerance over time, which means you may require a higher dosage as your body becomes immune to the affects.

Remember, the more CBD you consume, the longer it stays in your body.

If 15 mg of CBD remains in your system for 2 days, 25 mg might linger for 4 or 5 days.

How Long is CBD Detectable?

The answer to this question isn’t as straightforward as you might think. The main reason being, most drug tests aren’t designed to test for CBD.

Random drug tests for employment and even for individuals on probation are designed to detect traces of THC and other illegal substances. Because the use of CBD (with a THC level of under .3%) for recreational use is legal in most states, people rarely test for it.

The initial affects of CBD products and supplements last only a few hours for most users. Traces of the product are said to leave the body within 2 to 5 days, even in users who take up to 700 mg per day for six weeks, as reported in one study.

The same study suggests that CBD taken orally completely leaves your system in about 14-28 days. While this may be true, CBD is untraceable in a blood test long before this 2 to 4 week mark.

CBD vape is said to leave your system even sooner. Once again, your history of use plays a factor.

Recreational users that consume CBD daily will have traces in their system longer than someone who’s trying CBD supplements for the first time.

One study reported that CBD in urine was only traceable for 24-hours following use.
