What “volume load” means here
For each exercise, this tool calculates sets × repetitions per set × entered external load, then sums every exercise. A session with 3 sets of 5 reps at 225 lb contributes 3,375 lb of volume load.
Research and strength-and-conditioning references use several definitions of training volume. Volume load is popular because it is simple to record outside a laboratory, but it is not mechanical work and it is not a complete measure of training stress.
Compare sessions without fooling yourself
Keep the exercise constant
A leg-press total and a squat total are not interchangeable because the movement and equipment differ.
Use one load convention
For two dumbbells, decide whether you enter one dumbbell or the combined pair, then stay consistent.
Count unilateral reps consistently
Choose total reps or reps per side and keep that same convention in every comparison.
Track effort separately
The same volume load can feel very different at RPE 6 versus RPE 10. Record RPE or RIR alongside it.
What the total leaves out
The calculation does not include the distance the load traveled, your body mass, range of motion, repetition speed, proximity to failure, exercise-specific leverage, or load relative to your maximum. Research comparing volume-load methods has shown that including displacement can change how sessions are ranked. Use this number to monitor a repeated exercise or session template—not to claim that different movements delivered the same stimulus.
